Annihilation of Demon Raktabija by Goddess Durga
There was a kingdom named ‘Triloki’ that was owned by the Devraj Indra in heaven. All the deities used to rule that kingdom and performed various duties linked to that kingdom. The demons named ‘Shumbha’ and ‘Nishumbha’ took over their kingdom forcefully with their evil powers and drove all the gods and goddesses out of that kingdom. After the demons took over that kingdom, the deities remembered the goddess ‘Adishakti’ to help them out of that difficult situation. For their help, the goddess ‘Jagdamba’ appeared from the body of the goddess ‘Parvati’ and started fighting with the demons. These demons then sent ‘Raktabija’ to fight with the goddess ‘Jagdamba’, as he was powerful.
The goddess started killing the entire army of ‘Raktabija’ in order to destroy him fully. The other gods provided their holy energies to the goddess Jagdamba to help her win that war. Thereafter, Lord Shiva assisted the goddess ‘Chandika’ to fight with ‘Shumbha’ and ‘Nishumbha.’ She warned those demons to return to Devraj Indra’s kingdom and go back to their land. They refused to go back and started the war against the goddess ‘Chandika.’
The ‘Raktabija’ was so powerful that from his one drop of blood, a new ‘Raktabija’ was born. As and when a drop of his blood fell from his body, it produced a new demon from that blood. After seeing this horrible situation, the goddess ‘Jagdamba’ assisted the goddess ‘Kali’ that she should keep her mouth open. As soon as she separated the heads of devils from their bodies, the goddess Kali drank all their blood. In that way, new Raktabija’s stopped producing, and it left only the original Raktabija for killing. After that, finally, the goddess Kali killed the demon ‘Raktabija’ by stripping his head apart from his body.
